Speak Up for Women

26 Jan

I recently attended the Champions Luncheon sponsored by the Institute for Surgical Excellence to support my friend Shelly Light Paolercio, an ovarian cancer survivor. The Institute for Surgical Excellence is a non-profit collaborative organization for emerging surgical technologies. Dr. Martin Martino and Dr. Caitlin Houghton chaired the luncheon held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Many women surgeons spoke at the event highlighting the need for women’s research not only in breast cancer research but uterine and ovarian cancers. Dr. Ginger Gardner, was a dynamic speaker, advocating for speaking up not only about the breast, but the rest! Dr. Sharona Ross received a Champions award and spoke about the breakthroughs in pancreatic cancer. The physicians also remarked about the importance for empowering women to become surgeons.

I learned that a miniscule amount of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget, is allocated for Women’s Health. According to last month’s article in science.org, “For decades, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has failed to prioritize and fund research on women’s health, says a report released by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)”. The NIH budget is more than 47 billion, yet some estimates for the women’s health allocation are less than three percent.

If women make up more than 50 percent of the population, why is there this disparity? Women, we need to speak up to Congress to keep us healthy!

Julia, the Ambassador

17 Oct

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wears the perfect tee. It’s not because it was designed by Wes Gordon of Carolina Herrera — although that’s a plus. It’s because 100 percent of this $35 T-shirt goes to charity.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the 2018 Saks Fifth Avenue Key to the Cure Ambassador, where this shirt is sold.

“I’m a breast cancer survivor so that is a huge part of my involvement with Saks’ Key To The Cure,” stated KTTC Ambassador Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “And, I’m absolutely thrilled that the AiRS Foundation is the beneficiary of the sales of the limited edition Key To The Cure t-shirt. Every penny from the t-shirt sales benefits the foundation, which helps women who are unable to afford breast reconstruction surgery post-mastectomy.”

I had to order this t-shirt at my local Saks store. The website said it was sold out, but there is a wait list. Note: It runs very small!

Key to the Cure 2015

Key to the Cure is a nationwide four-day charity shopping event at Saks Fifth Avenue. Saks partners with local breast cancer research teams for a kickoff party with plenty of  food, fashion and makeup. The kick off party is not to be missed. It’s the perfect girls night out.

This year I’m part of the Key to the Cure 2015 committee (see photo above by Tracey Benson Photography) that benefits the Comprehensive Cancer Program at Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. Since the event is nationwide, google your city and Key to the Cure to find your event.

In my location, the host to Key To The Cure is Michael DeSio, Vice President General Manager of the Palm Beach Gardens Saks. (He is guy in the photo.) The Palm Beach Gardens’ 17th Annual Key To The Cure event is on Wednesday, October 14. For more information call The JMC Foundation Office 561-263-5728 or register online at the Jupiter Medical Foundation.

Motowners, the event in Detroit is Thursday Oct. 15. Ina Levinson is the the Vice President General Manger at the Somerset Saks. For more information, visit this site.

Every year a fashion designer creates a unique T-shirt modeled by a celebrity. This year the designer is Jason Wu and the celebrity ambassador is Julianne Moore. This photo is in the new Saks catalog, and the T-shirt can be purchased.

This is a great cause and a great event!
