RIP: Styleline Magazine

28 Sep

This is the last issue of Styleline magazine produced by The Detroit Media Partnership. It’s disappointing that another Motown magazine has disappeared. Editor Karen Buscemi did a fabulous job of keeping all of us motown fashion gurus in style. Karen, you will find a wonderful home soon. To all my colleagues,  I will miss reading you especially the kids’ corner with Danialle Karmanos, the fun reads by Julie Yolles, and touring the homes  with Jeanine Matlow and Gene Meadows. As a former fashion editor, I can sympathize with the staff. To Hour, Detroit HomeAmbassador and Chuck Bennett’s blog The Social D we are counting on you to keep publishing!

Book Beat: An Independent Find

Independent bookstores are few and far between. One worth visiting is Book Beat in Oak Park, Mich. They have the best children and photography books.

Their service is stellar, and you will not be disappointed by their recommendations. I just purchased the children’s book Where’s my Tushy? by Motowner Deborah Aronson. It seems that the bottoms or derrieres go on vacation, and it’s fun to see what happens when no has seat to sit down on.

Just found this healthy salad from Ann Arbor Vegan Kitchen!

Ann Arbor Vegan Kitchen

Spinach and Kale Salad with Pecans, Dried Cherries, and Maple Citrus Dressing

Which do you think is more nutritious, spinach or kale?

Most people might guess kale, but according to an article in The Huffington Post (Kale vs. Spinach: Which Is Healthier?), both are “very healthy choices. Kale might have the edge here, but spinach is no slouch.”

But why choose? Combine both in this delightfully delicious salad. It’s extremely easy to assemble, and the dressing is oh so good! A bit sweet and yet a little tart, it has a burst of flavor and a little kick. I made this for my students in our vegan cooking class a few weeks back, and everyone was so surprised that a dressing could be this good, and this fast to prepare. And with super foods kale and spinach, you’re getting plenty of Vitamins A, B6, C, K, folate, calcium, copper, manganese, iron, and fiber.

You can certainly add your own twist to…
