Perfectly Pink

13 Jan

It was an amazing evening at the Breakers in Palm Beach this past weekend to benefit the Promise Fund.  Every guest who attended the benefit received an autographed copy of The Queen of Soul by my friend Linda Solomon (top right, with husband Barry). Of course, if you are a Motowner, you know there is only one queen of soul — Aretha Franklin.

The weekend started out with a live radio show from Florida with broadcaster Michael Patrick Shiels, host of Michigan’s Big Show, interviewing Linda and Promise Fund founder Nancy Brinker. The Promise Fund, founded by Nancy Brinker, Detroiter Julie Fisher Cummings and Laurie Silvers, works to eliminate barriers to quality healthcare for Palm Beach County neighbors to save lives due to late stage breast cancer and cervical cancers. It was announced at the event that a hologic (3D) mammography machine with be housed at FoundCare, a non-profit federally qualified health care center, where thousands of women come for primary care.

Many of the attendees attended wore pink including myself (lower right).

Thanks to AutoNation Cadillac, West Palm Beach, for donating books. Kudos to all the supporters!

The Motown Queen

18 Oct

Beyonce might be the Queen B to some, but for us Detroiters there is only one Queen — Aretha. Photojournalist Linda Solomon captures her talent and artistry in The Queen Next Door  just published by Wayne State University Press.

Solomon is an award-winning photojournalist with a non-profit foundation Pictures of Hope, providing cameras to children living in shelters.

She developed a trusted relationship with Franklin and documented her career. From Christmas parties to birthday bashes to recording sessions, this is a personal portrait of a Motown legend. Yes, the Pink Cadillac is prominent.

You just gotta have R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Barnyard home filled with fun, fantasy and love

Photojournalist Linda Solomon’s home is featured in the Detroit News. It’s truly a labor of love, and a unique home filled antiques that Linda and her husband, Barry, have collected over the years.  Flea market finds, turquoise-laden objets d’ art, and whimsical bric-a- brac fill this treasure trove. I had the opportunity years ago to feature the home in the now defunct Style magazine, and Detroit News writer Maureen Feighan captures the spirit too.

Linda Solomon sure is talented. See my previous post when she was on the Meredith Viera Show.

Photojournalist and Motowner Linda Solomon will be on Meredith Viera’s show on Monday, Sept. 15.

Linda will be with children who participated in the Pictures of Hope Project, where children use photography to express their “hopes and dreams.”  The children are from homeless shelters — many have never used a camera before. Linda guides them and teaches them.

In addition to being an accomplished photographer, Linda is also an author.

In her book ,The Key: Celebrated People Unlock their Secrets to LifeLinda features insights from more than 50 celebrities. I turned to the page on Meredith Viera and found this wonderful saying about the glass being half full.
