Fashionista Friends and Authors

18 Oct

Neiman Marcus, in Troy, Michigan, recently hosted a fashionable event with three Detroit icons — Brenda Rosenberg (left), Suzy Farbman (middle) and Linda Solomon. Not only are these women known for their stylish looks, but they are authors of dynamic books. They are also friends, and I’m proud to say that they are my friends too.

When I wrote about Brenda previously in the former magazine Style, I described her as bold, bodacious and beautiful. Well, she’s so much more. For the past several years, she has been on a journey of peacemaking, bringing together many ethnic and religious groups. Now, she is the author of Charmed, a memoir told through her charm bracelet. Brenda will be honored on Nov. 10 at the Trade Secrets event at the Detroit Marriott Troy.

Suzy Farbman is a past honoree of Trade Secrets, featured previously on Motown Savvy. She is an award-winning journalist and compelling story teller. She has covered design for national and Detroit publications. Her latest book, Detroit’s Cass Corridor & Beyond, is part memoir and part art book. Farbman includes personal photos of her homes in Franklin, Michigan and Sarasota Florida with photographs by Beth Singer.

In welcoming readers to her book, Suzy writes: “By opening our doors and telling our story in these pages through vivid images and anecdotes, I am sending a personal love letter to each reader. As you turn these pages, I invite you to celebrate with me the love of family, the joys of collecting, the resilience of one of the world’s great cities, and the brilliant diversity of Detroit’s artists.”

Linda Solomon is an award-winning photojournalist nationally and locally. I featured her on Motown Savvy when her book on Aretha Franklin the Queen Next Door was first published. As I posted before, Linda developed a trusted relationship with Franklin and documented her career. From Christmas parties to birthday bashes to recording sessions, this is a personal portrait of a Motown legend. Yes, the Pink Cadillac is prominent.

Linda’s passion is her Pictures of Hope project, helping children in need express their thoughts with a camera.

As you can see, these three fashionable women are extraordinary!

Wearable Trends that Endure

9 Jun

Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to update your wardrobe. Here are some fashionable outfits that you can easily recycle into next season.

These outfits are all from Neiman Marcus, where I attended a trend event. Above is a Proezena Schouler top, but it’s easy to mix and match any summer floral top you have. The knotted waist updates the look.

Next, is a striped shirt paired with khaki cropped pants and a blazer. What I love about this outfit is that it transitions into fall.

It’s easy to pair a striped skirt with a pop of color or vice versa — striped top with a colorful, cropped pant.

Finally, add a flounced animal print skirt with that easy-to-go-to black top.

Happy Summer!

Kiss and Tell: Top Ten Spring Lipsticks

22 Feb

The easiest and least expensive way to change your outfit and usher in the warm weather is to purchase a new lipstick. Here’s a top ten list for the season in a range of hues. The beauty experts at Neiman Marcus, Troy, provided the majority of the list, along with some help from Ruby’s Balm in West Bloomfield, Mich.

Pantone, the international color forecaster, selects Rose Quartz and Peach Echo as the trends for spring 2016. Rose Quartz, a sheer pink, reflects calmness and gentleness, while Peach Echo evokes warmth and playfulness.

Gillian Berger, owner of Ruby’s Balm in West Bloomfield echoes the subtle shades. “Nudes are the trend with soft lips and bold eyes.”

Also hot — red hot. “Say goodbye to the dark and come into the light and brights, says Lindsey Machachek Barile, PR manager at Neiman Marcus, Troy. “A major trend for spring is confident reds. This trend translates across all categories, from ready-to-wear, to accessories and, of course, beauty.”

The lipstick names are as fun and lively as the products. Here’s the top ten (brand and name):

  1. Marc Jacobs, Moody Margot

  1. Le Metier de Beaute, Amelie

This luscious color is from the “Kiss Kiss” collection.

  1. Trish McEvoy, Perfect Plum

It’s not only perfect for lips, but it’s also a beauty booster for cheeks.trish

A Flawless Beauty Marc

Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Creme

New York designer Marc Jacobs is known for his Louis Vuitton confections as former head of the French fashion house, and his namesake labels in clothing and handbags. But his eponymous beauty collection, only a few years old, makes an indelible mark this spring. Neiman Marcus, the upscale department store, announced it will carry his collection.

“The timing could not be better because spring is about taking a playful approach to beauty — the perfect time to break away from your go to colors and daily routine,” writes Kelly St. John, vice president of beauty at Neiman Marcus, in her newsletter.

The Marc Jacobs Beauty collection features the traditional eye, lip and face makeup with an aura of drama. The shiny, black-lacquered packaging is glam, glossy and seductive. An elegant silver button snaps shut compacts and lipstick cases. Jacobs has transferred his couture designs to the eyes, and the eyes are a makeup homerun. The mascara is called Lash Couture with three new formulas: Velvet Noir for volume, Feather Noir for definition and Lame Noir for luster. But it’s the eyeliners, called Eye Crayons, that are a must buy. The Fineliner Ultra Skinny ($24) glides on and provides definition for a wide-eyed look. The Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25) in two dozen hues from MariGold to Orange Crush to Violet Femme makes a bold statement from morning until midnight.

In keeping with spring trends, Jacobs’ lipsticks run the gambit from nude shades to bold reds and fuchsias.Marc Jacobs Beauty collection is about creating your own style and having fun.“I love makeup, and I love that it transforms,” Jacobs says. “It lets you be who you want to be, lets you say what you want to say, and it gives you a voice, a vision, while having a good time.”

Favorites in the D

My buddy, Chuck Bennett (top, far left), hosted a fabulous soiree at the Roostertail in Detroit. The event marked the one-year anniversary of his blog the social D.

All the guests ate, drank and danced to all of Chuck’s favorites. Models wearing Neiman Marcus fashions (lower left) added to the ambiance.  Detroit’s finest food establishments catered the party — Forte Belanger, The London Chophouse, Bistro 82, Andiamo, Tre Monti, Addison Eatery  and yes,  Detroit’s own American Coney Island. Spirits were from Zim’s Vodka and Great Lakes Wine & Spirits. Proceeds from the auction items — a Shinola Watch and a Townsend getaway– benefited three charities. Danialle Karmanos Work it Out DKWIO, the Horatio Williams Foundation and the Rhonda Walker Foundation were the beneficiaries.

I had the opportunity to chat with some interesting people — Dr. Joel Kahn, one of my favorite Beaumont doctors (upper right in the photo with me) and Karen Buscemi (lower right), Rosemary Bannon, Marcy Hayes, Ina Levinson, Tom Anderson, Terry Olson.

To see some of the fascinating people at the event, check out D business. (I even made it in the party pics!)

The Social D Debuts

There’s a new website in motown, and Neiman Marcus in Troy, Mich.  celebrated its debut with a fashionable bash.  My friend and colleague, Chuck Bennett, unveiled his lifestyle blog —The Social D, designed by Martin LeFlore.  Chuck is well known in the media as a fashion guru and party scene stealer. His words are as melodious as the sounds of Ben Sharkey and Kimmie Horne who performed at the party. From leather to fur, from hot colors to minimal hues, the fashions were fabulous. Philanthropist Danialle Karmanos (top left) and DKWIO founder introduced Chuck as “the godfather of Detroit.” Need we say more?
