Detroit: Fashion Central

27 Feb

My friend and colleague, Chuck Bennett (above), celebrated Black History Month with a presentation of Detroit designers on Fox2Detroit. Some of the designers include: FlyTy, Donovan Dewberry, and William Palmer Homme.

The New York Times recognizes the fashion acumen of Motown. Jessica Iredale wrote about it in the article “Could Detroit be the Next Fashion City,?” Iredale showcases some happenings in Detroit and mentions fashion icons. Of course, there’s Linda Dresner, who ran boutiques in Birmingham, Michigan and New York and promoted designers that become famous. I’ve featured her on my blog here. Iredale talks about how Gucci collaborated with the Detroit Vs. Everybody collection.

Motown is home to many fashion designers including: Tracy Reese, Anna Sui, John Varvatos and the upcoming fashion phenom Carter Altman. Detroiters have always known about Carhartt, based in Dearborn, Michigan since 1889.

If you’re not sure that Detroit is a fashion city, check out Detroit Sewn. Or ask my buddy Chuck Bennett. He can be found on Facebook, Instagram (chuck_bennett) or Mr. ChuckBennett on Twitter.

Isaac Mizrahi’s Memoir

16 Sep

While I was in Motown last week, I met fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi. It’s the second time I met him as I interviewed him almost 20 years ago when I was editor of Style magazine, a local Detroit publication no longer in existence.

He’s still engaging, funny and oh so talented. He was in Detroit speaking at a Hadassah event about his new memoir, I.M. Mizrahi spoke about growing up in an insulated, Syrian Jewish community in New York. He was conflicted as an overweight youth, but found his calling in the arts. He sketches, sings, performs, and dances. He was even in the movie Fame, as one of the dancers in high school.

Mizrahi is a well-known fashion icon, and now he can add writer to his list of accomplishments. It’s a candid, honest portrait with fashion, glamour and plenty of Jewish mother stories.

Pretty in Pink at Met Gala

8 May

The fashions at the Met Gala are always show stopping. Pink seems to be a favorite choice for come of the celebrities. Lady Gaga’s outfit (top left) or costume was extravagant, keeping with her persona. Kacey Musgraves came as a Barbie doll, as the theme was “camp.” But the pink elegant gown award, in my opinion goes to Hailey Baldwin (below). What do you think?

Check out these Czech Fashions

26 Sep

I was recently travelling in the Czech Republic, and as a fashion aficionado, I noticed the stylish couture.

The Czech designed sneakers are fabulous. There is even a USA website for Botas66.

I was immediately drawn to the Scura store, where the  comfy, fashion-forward athletic wear spoke to me. I purchased a black sweatshirt hoodie jacket, with an asymmetrical zipper and pockets with button flaps. It comes in gray and in a two-tone gray and black. The skirts and tops are equally stylish. Click on Scura  for the website. I’m wearing it at the Prague Castle courtyard, but I also included a photo from the store’s website where the detailing is prominent.

And please don’t answer the question, who wore it better?

A Fashionista Bargain

3 May

Who can resist a fashionable bargain? Not me. I purchased this dress at Target for $35. It’s from the Victoria Beckham Collection. The clothes are fun and chic. There are pops of fuchsia and orange and even some honeybees and flowers. Check it out here.  And there is a sale.  (My dress is now $24.50.)  A bigger bargain !

From Bloomfield to Baja

18 Jan

Unknown

Former Motowner Scott Studenberg  (right) is  one of the founders of the unisex fashion label Baja East. The website describes the collection as
“an ambisexual approach to everday dressing where west coast meets aggressive city cool.”  I recently discovered the line in a Wall Street
Journal article by Lauren Sherman quoting Studenberg about the classic Patagonia and how it inspired his Baja East fashions.  Check out Baja East. Most national magazines already have.

Fashion designer Pamella Roland unveiled her resort fashions the other day at Saks in Troy, Mich. The fashion show and event called “Heart to Heart” benefitted the Ministrelli Women’s Heart Center at Beaumont Health System. Her flirty and sexy dresses were in blush colors and rich hues. From short styles to long gowns, the clothes were dramatic and elegant.

A Family Fashion Affair

20 Oct

Story-Image-2

The New York Times recently featured an article on siblings starting their own men’s wear label. Two brothers hail from Franklin. They are Matthew and Alex Orley, who now have a collection of Italian-made knitwear. Matthew’s wife, Samantha, is the female partner.

From sweaters, pants to ties and hats, the fashions can be both classic and colorful.

The Orley website describes the brand as a “combination of elegant yet youthful, irreverent design with a focus on luxury knitwear and commitment to the highest quality materials and manufacturing.”

The collection is sold at Bergdorf Goodman and on the website. Hopefully a women’s line is in the future. . . .

European Fashions in Motown

The other day I was walking down the street in Birmingham, Mich. and this black  and gold-trimmed doorway was bedecked with flowers. I peeked in, and to my surprise, I was greeted by Lama Tayeb (below), the owner of the new boutique Coqueta.

photo-2

The colorful boutique was filled with clothing from Milan and Paris. “I have a passion for fashion,” says Tayeb, who travels throughout Europe selecting beautiful clothing, shoes and handbags for Coqueta.

Enter the equisite  doorway of Coqueta and you, too, will see beautiful fashion!
