Small Business Saturday

26 Nov

As the president of the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, I understand the challenges of small businesses. So, this Saturday, please frequent your favorite hometown store. Here are some of my favorite Detroit stores: Artloft, Book Beat, Toyology, House of Style, Tender, Marlee’s, Sundance and Leon & Lulu.

Or go online to shop at Hatch.co that features small artisans. Hatch.co offers $15 off any purchase of $50 to Motown Savvy readers with this special code: MotownSavvy14.

What are you favorite independent stores?

Let it Snow!

23 Nov

So, I just bought a new Eddie Bauer parka that is tested for -30F. I’m hoping that it will keep me warm. I purchased it at the local mall Twelve Oaks in Novi, Mich. It has a detachable hood, which comes in handy. I’m all set, but I found more items to keep you toasty. (See more photos below.)

Scarves are a must have in addition to gloves. Check out these soft, stylish scraves from Marlee’s. Marlee’s is a great speciality store that is not a chain.  (I will post more about cool, small businesses this week to celebrate the Saturday’s small business shopping day.

Also from Marlees is this fashionable vest.

And what about this elegant robe? Look at the beautiful trim — available at Pottery Barn.

Conquering Crohn’s

14 Nov

securedownloadThe 37th Annual Gala Evening at the Movies to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America recently honored Chuck Bennett and the late Dr. Jason Bodzin.  Roop Raj and Amy Andrews from Fox2 hosted the event. More than 300 Detroiters packed the Maple Theater in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Dr. Steven Klein, chief of colon and rectal surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak gave a wonderful tribute to his former classmate the late Dr. Bodzin. Rhonda Walker of WDIV and Roop Raj of Fox2 talked glowingly about my friend, Chuck Bennett. They described Chuck as the “man about town, style guru, trendsetter, fashionista, Social D founder, etc.” The best description is that he has a big heart!

Special thanks to my other friend Jason Brown of PublicCity PR who invited me to the event with my friend Judy Robinson.

Cuddle Up!

7 Nov

jpeg Meterologist Chuck Gadica visited Beaumont’s Children Hospital the other day to read to the children. He brought along his book “Tommy Starts Something Big.” In the book, Tommy’s bear is called Cuddles. Tommy realizes that Cuddles can bring happiness to others. He asks his Aunt Suzi to make more bears, so he can give the bear to special people who might need to cuddle. Gadica created the fun phrase “Cuddle Alert” to describe cold days and nights in his weather forecasts. He came with  Grace Centers of Hope who help needy children with their Hands of Hope Center.

Cuddle up all!

Pamella Roland: Heartfelt

Fashion designer Pamella Roland unveiled her resort fashions the other day at Saks in Troy, Mich. The fashion show and event called “Heart to Heart” benefitted the Ministrelli Women’s Heart Center at Beaumont Health System. Her flirty and sexy dresses were in blush colors and rich hues. From short styles to long gowns, the clothes were dramatic and elegant.
