Small Business Saturday

26 Nov

As the president of the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, I understand the challenges of small businesses. So, this Saturday, please frequent your favorite hometown store. Here are some of my favorite Detroit stores: Artloft, Book Beat, Toyology, House of Style, Tender, Marlee’s, Sundance and Leon & Lulu.

Or go online to shop at Hatch.co that features small artisans. Hatch.co offers $15 off any purchase of $50 to Motown Savvy readers with this special code: MotownSavvy14.

Summer Shoe Spree

8 Jul

Summer shoes are always so comfortable especially because you don’t need socks.  I purchased three very distinct shoes this season that I’m enjoying. The flowered heels are by Ivanka Trump from Nordstroms.(This link takes you to the sale!)

The silver and black sandals are by Miu Miu from Tender in Birmingham, Mich. They are are all sold out!

The beige canvas shoes are Tom’s. I love the philosophy of Tom’s where they buy a pair of shoes for a needy family when you purchase one!

The shoes below are from my daughter’s closet. Her foot grew during pregnancy, and she can no longer wear these. They make a nice addition to my collection. Did you buy any shoes this summer?

A Tender Moment

Motown fashionistas celebrated the 20th anniversary of  the boutique Tender in Birmingham, Mich. Sisters Cheryl and Karen Daskas have an eye for style in shoes, handbags, jewelry and women’s apparel. They introduce emerging and established designers with panache. The story carries all the exclusive designers like Miu Miu, Lanvin and Jason Wu. But, I love it when they introduce an upcoming young designer who is featured the very next month in Vogue magazine. Here are some snapshots from their anniversary party held on Nov. 20th at the store.

An Eye For Style

Jewelry designers Cathy Schwartz (right) and Beth Banker recently held a trunk show at Tender in downtown Birmingham. The two business partners and friends met several years ago in New York when Banker noticed that Schwartz had a fabulous handbag. “She has an eye for style,” said Banker. The two combined their talents and created CatherineBeth Jewelry. Banker and Schwartz both describe their collection as “edgy and sophisticated.” The collection incorporates precious and semi- precious jewels, metal, brass, wood and leather. Vintage pieces add to the eclectic look.  They sell their line at private sales and boutiques. Just recently Schwartz moved back home to Birmingham. “I’m happy to be home; it’s a great place to raise children,” said Schwartz.
