Publishing Powerhouse

11 Mar

If you love to read and adore books, then you must meet Zibby Owens, the founder of Zibby Media. Zibby Media is a boutique publishing house. There are book clubs, podcasts, events and even an independent book store in Santa Monica, California.

I’ve met Zibby a few times–twice at the Mandel JCC Palm Beaches and at an event she hosted for readers and authors. I attended Zibby’s Palm Beach Retreat at the end of January, where I had the opportunity to hear several authors including Marie Benedict, author of Queens of Crime; Miranda Cowley Heller, author of The Paper Palace; Jenna Blum, author of Murder Your Darlings; Audrey Ingram, author of The Summer We Ran; and Julie Doar, author of The Gallagher Place. We also listened to book influencers Sophia Stallone and Lizz Schumer. It was a fun event packed with interesting conversations, aspiring writers and celebrated authors. The gathering fostered genuine conversations and literary inspiration. Below is a photo of myself and author Diane Bergner (right) of the Royal Coconut Beach Lunch Club at the event.

On March 10th, Zibby was interviewed along with author Anabelle Gurwitch (below), author of The End of My Life is Killing Me. Zibby Media is the publisher. The book will be released on March 17th, and the subtitle is The Unexpected Joys of a Cancer Slacker. Gurwitch spoke about her out-of-the-blue diagnosis of a terminal disease with wit, charm and passion. “There’s always an opportunity when something happens,” she says. She faces her illness with resilience and talks about staying engaged when thrown a curveball resulting in a life altering experience.

The cover of the book is very revealing. It’s a chicken in a yoga pose. Yes, it’s quirky and adventurous, just like the author.

Before I close this piece I want to give a shout out the talented local Palm Beach area authors– Diane Bergner, Debbie Babitt, Dara Levan, Nancy Sims, Rosemary Gensler, Harriet Vogel. I know there are many more so if you would like your name added, please comment.

What If?

21 Nov

What if you could take the road not travelled? What if you could follow your dream? Meet Alisha Fernandez Miranda (right) who chronicled her journey in the memoir My What if Year. She became an intern at age 40. She pens an upbeat, fun, life-changing adventure. She literarily takes a break from motherhood and her job to become an intern on Broadway. She also worked in fitness, art and the hotel world. Her book is inspiring. I had the opportunity to meet the author at the recent Celebrating Sisterhood Luncheon in North Palm Beach, Florida.

When I returned home from the luncheon I turned on my Linkedin app to read about someone who also followed her dream. A Detroit cardiologist I know took a three-month sabbatical and trekked to 12,000 feet in the Himalayas.
