Motown’s Love Doctor

Dr. Terri Orbuch is the LOVE doctor.  Maybe you’ve seen her on Fox2 or read about her in the Wall Street Journal. She talks about relationships and love. I’ve heard her lectures, and she is magnetic. But the best part is her tips on relationships — everything from dealing with in-laws to money to sex.

She is the lead researcher in a National Institutes of Health ongoing study following more than 350 couples for more than twenty-two years. She is the author of “5 Simple Steps to Take your Marriage from Good to Great” and “Finding Love Again: 6 Simple Steps to a New and Happy Relationship.”

She is on the cover of MY (Metro Detroit’s Fabulous Women,) magazine.

She will be the host of an upcoming PBS special, Secrets from the Love Doctor. It airs in Detroit 6:30 p.m. Sept 8, but check your local listings because it’s a national show.

Detroit 2 Nepal

There may not be a direct flight from Motown to Nepal, but there’s a strong connection. Thanks to the work of  Richard Keidan, M.D.

Dr. Richard Keidan first travelled to Nepal on vacation, and he became enamored with the people and the county. He observed that the Khotang District was cut off from roads and communication, without power, without waste management (toilets) and without clean drinking water and with very limited access to health care and educational opportunities.

After seeing the significant needs in this region and the amazing determination of the people,  he founded the D2N: Detroit2Nepal Foundation. Its mission is to improve public health, health care, and educational opportunities for children in this remote Himalayan district. The Foundation works directly with people in the village and the projects are initiated by the Nepalese.

According to Dr. Keidan, “This approach creates jobs for community members and also allows them to learn how to manage these projects.”

On Sunday, August 25 at the Birmingham Bike Festival, there will be a parade at 1 p.m. to raise funds for D2N and the Miracle Fund at Beaumont Children’s Hospital. Dr. Charles Main, Beaumont’s Chief of Pediatric Oncology will serve as the Grand Marshal. Dr. Main will be retiring after a 50-year medical career. The parade will also honor Alexandra Graham, a 16-year-old who lost her fight with bone cancer. The parade is titled Miles4Alex.

Channeling Downton Abbey

The other night some members of my book club group attended a Downton Abbey party where a representative of PBS told us about the upcoming fourth season, and we had a lecture about the some beautiful British estates.Many of the attendees dressed in costume. Everyone thought Christine (top, right) looked exactly like the character Anna. We learned that one new character on the popular TV series will be played by Paul Giamatti. Art historian Wendy Evans presented the lecture on the treasure houses of Britain and told us many interesting facts including that Highclere castle (home of Downton Abbey) and the Parliament were designed by the same architect, Charles Barry.

$2 Billion Bash

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson thanked more than 700 people the other day by throwing  a party at the Palace. The event celebrated the innovative companies that helped diversify Oakland County, Michigan. The “Emerging Sector” companies generated a $2 billion investment in the county and created 42,000 jobs. The invitation-only event was a thank-you to all the growing and burgeoning businesses.

I attended the event representing Beaumont Health System. Since it was at the Palace, the home of the Detroit Pistons, James “Buddha” Edwards attended. He is a former Pistons. I am in the photo on the right with my friend, Marcia Auster (left). Marcia attended the event with her husband, Barry Auster, M.D., of Oakland Aesthetic Dermatology in Farmington Hills. Dr. Auster is president of the Oakland County Medical Society.

Antiques Roadshow Visits Motown

photo Antiques Roadshow kicked off their 2013 season with a taping in Detroit on Saturday, June 1. Although I was not at the taping, I was fortunate to be invited to a behind-the-scenes preview at the Townsend Hotel a few days before the show hosted by U.S. Trust. U.S. Trust thanked my friend, Lois Shaevsky who is on the Board of Trustees at Detroit Public Television for her community work at the luncheon. More than 50 people were treated to a lecture “The State of Jewelry Today” discussing the trends, values and styles. The keynote speaker was Kate Waterhouse (shown, left), a PBS Antiques Roadshow Appraiser and Director of Jewelry, Heritage Auctions. Carolyn Ashleigh (shown, right) is a Heritage consultant in Birmingham. So what’s trending now in the jewelry? According to Waterhouse, watch collections are very popular among the young twenty and thirty-somethings. But the best takeaway was that jewelry rarely loses its intrinsic value. She showed a strand of natural pearls that went up for auction in 2004 and sold for $21,500. A similar pieces sold for $218,00 in 2011. Each guest received the book “The Collector’s Handbook,” by James Halperin, Gregory J. Rohan and with Mark Pendergast. I can’t wait to see the value of some Motown treasures on the upcoming Antiques Roadshow from Detroit!

Bring a Lunch, Play a Bunch

photo Bring a Lunch, Play a Bunch is the name of the Playworks Detroit healthy living campaign.  Playworks provides physical activity in Detroit area schools. This non-profit fundraises to place a recess coach in the school for the entire year. To get in the game, donate your lunch money. Whether it’s for one day or one week, children will benefit. Donors will receive a lunch bag with tips for healthy eating. The campaign runs until May 31st.  At Campus Martius on June 4th, Playworks and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will host lunch and recess for Detroit kids. In the Pink

Detroit’s Comerica Park was decked out in pink as participants gathered for 22nd Annual Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, which raises funds for breast cancer research.

More than 30,000 people participated in the event. Live music entertained the walkers and runners, while crowds cheered along the way. The Susan B. Komen Foundation is the largest breast cancer charity in the country.

If you did not participate in the Race for the Cure, last week there is an opportunity to join the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Event. The West Bloomfield event will start 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8 at West Bloomfield High School. TV personality Lila Lazarus will welcome crowd. Funds raised at Relay for Life support all types of cancer.

Game Changer on Detroit Playgrounds

Playworks Detroit improves the health and wellness of children by increasing opportunities for safe, physical activity and meaningful play. Since 2010, Playworks has been changing the lives of youngsters through partnerships with low income schools and community initiatives.  Now in 13 schools throughout Metro Detroit, Playworks is expanding due to a new partnership with the Detroit Lions. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Playworks Get in the Game Luncheon. The Game Changer Awards were given to these community partners: Beaumont Health System , Fair Food Network, Just Speak, Detroit Regional Chamber and Bloomfield Hills School District PTO. David McGhee, a motivational speaker and an instructor at Mott Community College, addressed the crowd with a powerful message of believing in students.

To quote Playworks Founder Jill Vialet, “Kids who know how to resolve conflict on the school yard are more likely to grow up into adults who can collaborate to get things done.”

Tigers Spring Training

The Detroit Tigers played the St. Louis Cardinals during spring training at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL. Motown fans cheered the Tigers to victory with the final score of 3-0. The Tigers management graciously interacted with the fans. General Manager Dave Dombrowski posed with a fan (top left), while Manager Jim Leyland (lower right) autographed a ball for a young fan. The best part was the sunshine and the win.

Mosaic is Sing-sational

The Mosaic singers, of the Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit, are sensational. So it’s natural for them to perform Singsation.  On March 1 through 3, 2013 these young artists will honor some of Detroit’s iconic figures in Singsation. “In Singsation, Mosaic singers captures the heart of the city and keeps the feeling of funk and soul music alive,” says Mosaic Founder Rick Sperling. Expect fabulous dance moves, melodic harmonies and  soulful voices. Performances will take place at 8 p.m. on March 1 and March 2 and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 3. The Mosaic singers have performed at the White House and with legendary artists. For more information go to http://www.mosaicdetroit.org

Mosaic reports that 95% of the young artists involved in the program graduate high school and go to college.
