On my recent visit to the windy city, I stumbled upon a delicious doughnut shop — Glazed & Infused. They were scrumptious, and the flavors were divine. Red velvet, vanilla brulee and banana chocolate chip are just a few. The most popular is the the maple bacon long john. Do you prefer cupcakes or doughnuts? If it’s glazed, go with the doughnuts.
Chocolate Saltine Toffee aka Christmas Crack
24 DecMy colleague brought this to our holiday pot luck. It was delicious! I can’t wait to make it for more holidays and just change the toppings.
Are you sick of cookies yet? Wait, is that even possible? I really don’t think so. I know that I could NEVER get sick of cookies. But in case you are, I have a non-cookie Christmas dessert recipe for you. It is called Christmas Crack, aka Chocolate Saltine Toffee. Why is it called Christmas crack? Because you can’t stop eating the stuff! It is sooo good. I don’t know why I did this to myself. I love toffee, so naturally I haven’t been able to stop eating this since I made it. I finally had to hide it in the back corner of my freezer. Let’s hope I forget it is there today!

Jazzy Food
6 OctI experienced Cliff Bell’s in downtown Detroit during restaurant week. The ambiance with flickering candles, mahogany tables and walls is reminiscent of a supper club in the 40s. The food was delicious. As we left, the band was entering. Cliff Bell’s is known for its smooth jazz music. And nothing beats the Motown sound.

Bravo to Gail Simmons
24 SepTV personality Gail Simmons talks with her mouth full, and she admits it. In fact, her newest book is Talking with My Mouth Full: My Life as as Professional Eater. Simmons spoke at the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah’s Opening Luncheon. She is featured in the photo with Detroit Chapter President Joan Epstein (left). The Canadian-born foodie studied anthropology but found her way to the magazine world by writing restaurant reviews. She is currently the Special Projects Director of Food & Wine magazine. Since 2006, she has been the host and judge of Top Chef. She credits her rise to fame due to her love of food.
A Royal Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe
16 AugWhile vacationing in Harbor Springs Michigan, I tasted the best ice cream ever at Velvet. Owners Trish and Erik Berakovich named the store Velvet to evoke a royal ambiance and experience.
Just like the name, Velvet’s ice cream is regal and rich. My favorite flavor (there are 28) is the sea salt chocolate carmel. Let’s not forget about the candy — sumptuous homemade carmel corn and fudge. To complement the ice cream, Sanders products are available.
Purple reigns as the color of choice. The stylish boxes match the wallpaper.
Velvet is not to be missed on Main St. in Harbor Springs. The owners are thinking of opening a store in metro-Detroit. Where do you think the sweetest spot for Velvet 2 would be?
Flavored H20
12 JulFlavored water is so refreshing and easy to prepare. Just cut up fresh fruit and put it in the water. How lovely and thirst quenching does this photo look? The photo is by Alpha Smoot for Cup of Jo and Styled by Kalen Kaminski.
For an even easier drink, pick up Sparkling Ice at the market. My favorites are orange mango and coconut pineapple.
Do you have any favorite flavored waters?
Swingin’ in Houston
8 JulI visited Houston 4th of July weekend to check out wedding venues for my son and his Texan fiancee.
We stopped by the Swinging Door restaurant for some authentic Texan BBQ food. This rustic place is the perfect spot for the rehearsal dinner. The food is fantastic! They serve beef brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey and sausage. The sides are beans, potato salad, cole slaw, dirty rice and green beans. For dessert, pecan pie, brownies and assorted fruit cobblers are yummy (shown). It’s the perfect family spot too. There’s a house rule: “If you start a jalapeno, you must finish it!”
Since y’all might not be in Houston soon, I recommend Slow’s BBQ in Motown!
