The New Foodie Mecca

7 Jan

Yep, it’s Detroit. That’s according to this article in The Washington Post.  The Post touts Motown as the place for new restaurants and top chefs from across the country. But, Detroiters are already in the know.

Mark Guarino writes, “Detroit is in the midst of a culinary transformation.”

“Rock-bottom housing stock and an emerging generation of young restaurateurs and chefs settling in to experiment have brought new restaurants, breweries, tasting rooms, cocktail bars, pop-up events and quirky lunch spots promising nutritious food — in neighborhoods where the only option to eat had previously been fast food,” he adds.

Guarino lists many of the restaurants Motown Savvy has written about already like Chartreuse and Gold Cash Gold.

And in today’s New York Times Style Section, there is an article on Shinola.

Great press, great city.

Toronto Reds

It’s not a sports team. It’s a casually chic restaurant in downtown Toronto. The Midtown Reds Tavern has exposed brick walls, wine bottle chandeliers and even a shuffle board. The unique atmosphere and delicious decor is worth visiting.

TV personality Gail Simmons talks with her mouth full, and she admits it. In fact, her newest book is Talking with My Mouth Full: My Life as as Professional Eater.  Simmons spoke at the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah’s Opening Luncheon. She is featured in the photo with Detroit Chapter President Joan Epstein (left). The Canadian-born foodie studied anthropology but found her way to the magazine world by writing restaurant reviews. She is currently  the Special Projects Director  of Food & Wine magazine. Since 2006, she has been the host and judge of Top Chef. She credits her rise to fame due to her love of food.

A Royal Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe

Velvet Ice Cream

While vacationing in Harbor Springs Michigan, I tasted the best ice cream ever at Velvet. Owners Trish and Erik Berakovich named the store Velvet to evoke a royal ambiance and experience.

Just like the name, Velvet’s ice cream is regal and rich.  My favorite flavor (there are 28) is the sea salt chocolate carmel. Let’s not forget about the candy — sumptuous homemade carmel corn and fudge.  To complement the ice cream, Sanders products are available.

Purple reigns as the color of choice. The stylish boxes match the wallpaper.

Velvet is not to be missed on Main St. in Harbor Springs. The owners are thinking of opening a store in metro-Detroit. Where do you think the sweetest spot for Velvet 2 would be?

Sweet Eight Mile

25 Jun

Diptic In the the movie “8 Mile” with Eminem, the street 8 Mile is portrayed as gritty.  Geographically, 8 Mile Road is also the street that separates the city from the suburbs in Detroit.  To Beekeeper Ron Wieske of Green Toe Gardens, 8 Mile Road is sweet. Wieske’s sweet version is his bottle of honey from one of his hives near the infamous road. If you do not prefer the taste of 8 Mile, then he has other flavors like Harsens Island and Saginaw Valley. He sells his honey every week at local markets in the metro Detroit area. Catch him at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market and Beaumont Farmer’s Market in Royal Oak on Thursdays. For candle aficionados, Wieske makes his own candles from 100 percent beeswax.

Bravo Bella Piatti

bella piatti

Bella Piatti, located directly across the street from the Townsend Hotel in downtown Birmingham, serves lucious Italian fare. The salad (above) with oranges, red onions, arugula and goat cheese (not shown) was tasty, as well as the whitefish encrusted with potatoes and truffles over lentils. The ambiance is beautiful with murals, vintage-inspired  chandeliers and even a mesh curtain (top, left) in the center of the restaurant for a private group. It’s worth a visit!
