Spinach and Kale Salad with Pecans, Dried Cherries, and Maple Citrus Dressing

Which do you think is more nutritious, spinach or kale?

Most people might guess kale, but according to an article in The Huffington Post (Kale vs. Spinach: Which Is Healthier?), both are “very healthy choices. Kale might have the edge here, but spinach is no slouch.”

But why choose? Combine both in this delightfully delicious salad. It’s extremely easy to assemble, and the dressing is oh so good! A bit sweet and yet a little tart, it has a burst of flavor and a little kick. I made this for my students in our vegan cooking class a few weeks back, and everyone was so surprised that a dressing could be this good, and this fast to prepare. And with super foods kale and spinach, you’re getting plenty of Vitamins A, B6, C, K, folate, calcium, copper, manganese, iron, and fiber.

You can certainly add your own twist to…

Motown the Musical in Motown

29 Aug

I was in New York City a few weeks ago and saw Motown the Musical. For Motown fans, the hit songs like “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” are great to hear. And there’s at least 40 more songs. The storyline is about Barry Gordy, Motown’s founder, and the entire cast of talent he catapulted into the spotlight like Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson.  If you are a Motown music fan, the play is a must see.

Tickets are on sale now for the Detroit engagement at the Fisher from October 21- November 16, 2014.

Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 1-800-982-2787, online at www.broadwayindetroit.com or www.ticketmaster.com

Inside a Fashion Icon’s Home

14 Aug

Linda Dresner is a fashion icon in Motown and in New York. Although she closed her NY boutique, her Birmingham, Mich. store is still a destination for fashion mavens. Wall Street Journal featured her dramatic home designed by architect Steven Sivak.   BN-EB129_mag091_G_20140811141431 Photography by Adrian Gaut

I know Linda, and she is as beautiful as the fashion she wears and sells. Here are some photos of her from my Style magazine editor days. Special thanks to my friend Lisa Brody, news editor at Downtown Publications, for sharing the article on her Facebook page and alerting me to this story.

Summer Shoe Spree

8 Jul

photo

Summer shoes are always so comfortable especially because you don’t need socks.  I purchased three very distinct shoes this season that I’m enjoying. The flowered heels are by Ivanka Trump from Nordstroms.(This link takes you to the sale!)

The silver and black sandals are by Miu Miu from Tender in Birmingham, Mich. They are are all sold out!

The beige canvas shoes are Tom’s. I love the philosophy of Tom’s where they buy a pair of shoes for a needy family when you purchase one!

The shoes below are from my daughter’s closet. Her foot grew during pregnancy, and she can no longer wear these. They make a nice addition to my collection. Did you buy any shoes this summer?

Let’s celebrate the 4th with some red, white and blue fashions. Hopefully, the weather will hold out so we can have some great BBQ food in style. Here’s some fun patriotic garb from Meijer’s — a Michigan-based retailer.

They have great price points. And if you are in Michigan be sure to visit their stores and their gardens!

Revolver: Pop-Up Culinary Delight

8 Jun

securedownload Revolver is not only a gun in the Motor City. These days it’s a fun restaurant — a revolving restaurant, because the chefs rotate weekly. This unconventional restaurant is located in Hamtramck, Mich., a city surrounded by the City of Detroit. We dined there with Chef Chris Skillingstad. The four-course, prix fixe menu included: Iceberg lettuce, bacon wrapped dates, gorgonzola, candied walnut, grape tomato and aerated dressing; Sunchoke textures, leeks, black garlic, craisin, sweet bell peppers and jalpeno; Duck with blackberry demi-glaze, cocoa, turnip, mushroom, asparagus and yam; Liquid cheesecake, pie crust, pecan, peach, mint and raspberry. The communal dining atmosphere was fun, and the food was delicious. Co-owner Peter Dalinowski (shown) stopped by everyone’s table to describe the concept and greet guests. Chefs all over the country are soliciting Revolver, as they can try out new, unique recipes.

European Fashions in Motown

The other day I was walking down the street in Birmingham, Mich. and this black  and gold-trimmed doorway was bedecked with flowers. I peeked in, and to my surprise, I was greeted by Lama Tayeb (below), the owner of the new boutique Coqueta.

photo-2

The colorful boutique was filled with clothing from Milan and Paris. “I have a passion for fashion,” says Tayeb, who travels throughout Europe selecting beautiful clothing, shoes and handbags for Coqueta.

Enter the equisite  doorway of Coqueta and you, too, will see beautiful fashion!
