Heartfelt Purses

11 Feb

On Friday, February 15th,  the 10th anniversary Go Red for Women Luncheon will be held at the MGM Grand Hotel in Detroit. The luncheon raises funds for heart disease, the number one killer of women in the United States. This educational luncheon, hosted by the American Heart Association, raises awareness about heart health. This year’s keynote speaker is Star Jones.

As part of the executive leadership committee, we all donated purses with a theme to be auctioned at the luncheon. I choose to donate the  “Shop West Bloomfield” purse since I’m active in the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce. I filled a purse with many items donated by several generous store owners including, Be Free Apparel, Guys N Gals, Lolly Ella, Nancy’s Linens, Peek-a-Boutique, Stage Deli and Toyology. Those cute dolls popping out of the purse are tooth fairy dolls from Peek-a-Boutique!

Lolly Ella Jewelry in West Bloomfield is currently selling a heart bracelet where some of the proceeds will be donated to the Beaumont Health System’s Ministrelli Heart Center.

Unity in the Community

For the last 19 years, the residents of West Bloomfield have come together to honor the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Parents, teachers, students and community leaders all celebrated the    vision and dream of this dynamic leader. The event started on January 20th with a walk down Orchard Lake Road, and then the participants gathered in the West Bloomfield High School Auditorium for a program. The student leaders and community officials addressed the crowd echoing King’s sentiment of a dream filled with peace, unity and inclusion. Superintendent Dr. Gerald Hill was clearly moved attending his first United We Walk Celebration. “We are here to honor the life of Martin Luther King and how he has made a lasting impression,” said Hill.  The keynote speaker was David Merritt, a West Bloomfield High School graduate and fashion designer, who donates 20 percent of his revenue to fund college scholarships. Even the elementary students participated in the day. Their posters graced the tables at the entrance of the auditorium. This poster from Ealy Elementary school sums up the day perfectly — children from every race and religion holding hands.

AIDS Walk Detroit held their thank you party for all walkers, volunteers and fundraisers who participated in the 2012 event at the Farmers Market in Royal Oak. The walk raised more than $200,000 to promote HIV prevention, education and services for those living with HIV/AIDS. Leon and Lulu, an eclectic boutique in Clawson, hosted the event. These charity events are de rigueur for this fascinating emporium. Leon and Lulu is the ultimate shopping experience for men, women, children and adults. There is something for everyone. From the $1.99 bangles (shown) to the stylish fashions to the whimsical home decor, this store is not to be missed. Even the space is a visual odyssey — it’s a former roller rink now bedecked with chandeliers.

Faberge Exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts

4 Dec

tumblr_mbrkt1DSnZ1qk3ttdDon’t miss the Faberge exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. More than 200 objects are on display including the precious eggs, jewelry, boxes, figurines, parasol tops and picture frames. The audio portion is easy to follow, and the history is just as fascinating as the designs. All the objects are from the collection of Lillian Thomas Pratt of Fredricksburg, Va., who bequeathed the art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. There’s even a Motown connection — she was the wife of John Lee Pratt, a General Motors executive. The educational programming of the exhibit is provided by the General Motors Foundation. If you can’t afford a Faberge (there’s only 42 eggs left in the world), you can always pick up a reproduction at the gift shop. Check out the gift shop reproduction below.

City Year Women’s Leadership Breakfast

28 Nov

Today I attended the second annual Women’s Leadership Breakfast at the Detroit Athletic Club.

City Year is an education-focused, non-profit organization. City Year works with young students in areas with high dropout rates. The program places a mentor in an at-risk high school and serves as role model. In this innovative program, City Year staff commit to a year of community service. I sat at a table with a City Year staffer who works at Cody High School in Detroit. The program sounds life-changing not only for the students it serves but for the participants.
