Back-to-School-Deals

Yes, that’s correct, but it’s only in a some states.  And it’s usually tied to back-to-school shopping. There’s a complete list of states and what they offer on the website Passion for Savings. It’s clothing and school supplies.

Hey, Motown — Let’s get this in Detroit and Michigan!

So proud of my Motown friends who participated in NCJW’s Back 2 School Store providing 400 Detroit school children with the necessary tools for success.

A few weeks ago ten college basketball coaches visited patients and cancer survivors at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. According to all the participants and the smiles on the children’s faces, the visit was better than any medicine. The event was partnership between Beaumont Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society. Thanks to Coach Greg Kampe of Oakland University whose idea turned into an impactful event.

Coaches included:  Steve Alford – University of California, Los Angeles, Rick Barnes – University of Tennessee, John Beilein – University of Michigan, John Calipari – University of Kentucky, Bob Huggins – West Virginia University, Tom Izzo – Michigan State University, Greg Kampe – Oakland University, Sean Miller – University of Arizona, Josh Pastner – University of Memphis and  Roy Williams – University of North Carolina.

“This was a ten person team united against fighting cancer, ” said Tom Izzo, Michigan State University.

Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Michigan hosts the best Baby Fairs. Last week the site was Royal Oak, Mich. where more than 500 new parents or parent-to-be attended mini-classes and educational forums on everything baby.  Danialle Karmanos, of the Karmanos Center for Natural Birth, inspired many new moms talking about natural childbirth.I had the opportunity to highlight the event on Fox2. If you live in the Detroit area, visit this week’s fair at Beaumont Hospital Troy on April 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Favorites in the D

My buddy, Chuck Bennett (top, far left), hosted a fabulous soiree at the Roostertail in Detroit. The event marked the one-year anniversary of his blog the social D.

All the guests ate, drank and danced to all of Chuck’s favorites. Models wearing Neiman Marcus fashions (lower left) added to the ambiance.  Detroit’s finest food establishments catered the party — Forte Belanger, The London Chophouse, Bistro 82, Andiamo, Tre Monti, Addison Eatery  and yes,  Detroit’s own American Coney Island. Spirits were from Zim’s Vodka and Great Lakes Wine & Spirits. Proceeds from the auction items — a Shinola Watch and a Townsend getaway– benefited three charities. Danialle Karmanos Work it Out DKWIO, the Horatio Williams Foundation and the Rhonda Walker Foundation were the beneficiaries.

I had the opportunity to chat with some interesting people — Dr. Joel Kahn, one of my favorite Beaumont doctors (upper right in the photo with me) and Karen Buscemi (lower right), Rosemary Bannon, Marcy Hayes, Ina Levinson, Tom Anderson, Terry Olson.

To see some of the fascinating people at the event, check out D business. (I even made it in the party pics!)

Come to the Cabaret!

10 Mar

Valarie Pettiford

Cabaret 313 is the vision of Motowners Sandi Reitelman and Allan Nachman. This non-profit organization builds on Detroit’s new energy and revitalization. The response has been overwhelming to the performances around town. On March 28 at the intimate Chrysler Black Box Theatre at the Detroit Opera House, Valarie Pettiford will perform. Pettiford (above) is a protege of Bob Fosse and a Tony-nominated performer. The early show is sold out, but tickets are still available to see this singer, dancer and actor at 9:45 p.m. For more information, visit cabaret313.org or call 313-405-5061.

Small Business Saturday

26 Nov

As the president of the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, I understand the challenges of small businesses. So, this Saturday, please frequent your favorite hometown store. Here are some of my favorite Detroit stores: Artloft, Book Beat, Toyology, House of Style, Tender, Marlee’s, Sundance and Leon & Lulu.

Or go online to shop at Hatch.co that features small artisans. Hatch.co offers $15 off any purchase of $50 to Motown Savvy readers with this special code: MotownSavvy14.

Conquering Crohn’s

14 Nov

securedownloadThe 37th Annual Gala Evening at the Movies to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America recently honored Chuck Bennett and the late Dr. Jason Bodzin.  Roop Raj and Amy Andrews from Fox2 hosted the event. More than 300 Detroiters packed the Maple Theater in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Dr. Steven Klein, chief of colon and rectal surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak gave a wonderful tribute to his former classmate the late Dr. Bodzin. Rhonda Walker of WDIV and Roop Raj of Fox2 talked glowingly about my friend, Chuck Bennett. They described Chuck as the “man about town, style guru, trendsetter, fashionista, Social D founder, etc.” The best description is that he has a big heart!

Special thanks to my other friend Jason Brown of PublicCity PR who invited me to the event with my friend Judy Robinson.
