On Friday, Jan. 10, I took the oath as President of the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce. West Bloomfield is a beautiful suburb near Detroit filled with lakes, parks and wildlife. It was a very special day especially since my friend, Monica Gayle (left), Evening News Anchor of Fox2 Detroit introduced me and was the master of ceremonies. The Chamber has more than 200 business members, and our mission is to grow business in the area, while promoting the community. Not only did my colleagues attend along with dignitaries in the Township, but many of my girlfriends supported me as well. Looking forward to 2014, and a special shout out to girlfriends everywhere!

A Tender Moment

Motown fashionistas celebrated the 20th anniversary of  the boutique Tender in Birmingham, Mich. Sisters Cheryl and Karen Daskas have an eye for style in shoes, handbags, jewelry and women’s apparel. They introduce emerging and established designers with panache. The story carries all the exclusive designers like Miu Miu, Lanvin and Jason Wu. But, I love it when they introduce an upcoming young designer who is featured the very next month in Vogue magazine. Here are some snapshots from their anniversary party held on Nov. 20th at the store.

I had the opportunity to meet Hillary Clinton (left) at a Beaumont Foundation event last week. On the right she is speaking with Florine Ministrelli the benefactor of the Ministrelli Women’s Heart Center at Beaumont Health System. Politics aside, it was quite thrilling to meet her. She gave a wonderful speech to the philanthropic group. When I met her I said one phrase “2016,” and she replied, “Thank you.”

Former Motowner Jessica Golden (left) returned home this week for the Detroit movie premiere of Los Wild Ones. Golden produced this documentary about the Rockability subculture of young musicians inspired by the 1950s. The movie chronicles Reb Kennedy and his wife (right) with their “family” of musicians all on Kennedy’s LA-based independent record label Wild Records.

Los Wild Ones is part of the the Uptown Film Festival in Birmingham, Mich.

The music is raw and intense, and the people showcased are better than reality TV.

Jessica Golden lives up to her name. The movie is gold.

Beaumont Health System’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery partnered with Playworks Detroit to transform the playground at Bennett Elementary School in Detroit into a colorful, safe space for play.

This community service project began as a vision of Harry N. Herkowitz, M.D., former chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery for Beaumont Health System, prior to his death in June. More than 20 Beaumont volunteers came together to make that vision a reality in honor of him.

Bennett Elementary School, located in Southwest Detroit, now has  a colorful home base circle, a hopscotch course, a foursquare court and a playground mural.

This year’s annual breakfast tribute honored Peter Karmanos Jr., the recently retired CEO of Compuware. Pete is a visionary and philanthropist along with his wife Danialle. The breakfast was held at the renovated Cobo Hall with beautiful vistas of the Detroit River. The choir from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences entertained the crowd.
